The Internet isn’t just for browsing web pages and sending and receiving email and other messages. Storing files on other computers is the order of the day, although it may not turn out to be easy to access folders on other users’ computers or even on computers connected to the local network at home or in the office. Also, it’s not easy to access servers which are secured using encryption. Most of the utilities built into the operating system only work when connecting to remote computers using insecure protocols such as FTP and Telnet, but more often than not it will be necessary to use secure variants such as SFTP or SSH.
WinSCP is one of the most popular tools for overcoming these obstacles. On the one hand, it provides a graphical interface for connection tasks via SSH and FTP, meaning that there’s no need to wrestle with complicated commands typed into an incomprehensible MS-DOS or Unix terminal window. You can use a terminal, of course, but most commands can also be entered through windows and drop-down menus or even by dragging and dropping files from the remote server to a folder on the local computer.
Among other possible uses is the ability to manage photo galleries on internet servers, or the content and design of a personal blog, or even the unlocking of your iPhone, which requires an SSH connection to be made between a computer and the telephone in order to enter into the system and unlock it.
In short, it’s a whole gamut of handy and effective tools which are essential for taking control of the Internet for web development and for making the most of the resources available on the web.
The program is available here: WinSCP.
