Transferring YouTube videos to your PC is a piece of cake

YouTube is becoming the new television for those generations growing up during the Internet revolution. The difficult part about using YouTube has always been wading through the many, many videos to find exactly the one you want amongst the multitude of similar ones. As such, ‘zapping’, or channel surfing, has become the norm on YouTube but it’s still annoying not to be able to save some of those videos so that you can carry them around with you on your multimedia player or mobile phone, where Internet access isn’t as easy, quick or cheap as it is at home.

Now, with Easy Video Downloader, you can do just that; all you need to do is copy the web address of the YouTube (or MySpace) page, paste it into the corresponding dialog box and select the video’s destination folder and its format. You can choose between a high-quality format and another adapted for mobile devices and multimedia players.

Once you’ve followed these steps, just click on the start button and, in a matter of seconds or minutes (depending on your Internet connection, the speed of your computer and the type of file you’ve chosen) you’ll have the YouTube or MySpace content saved in the local folder on your computer.

A spartan appearance, but it can handle anything

Despite its fairly minimalist appearance, this program is one of the most complete when it comes to downloading videos from web pages such as YouTube or MySpace. As well as letting you use the URL of the videos as the download source, it also has a built-in mini-browser which directly accesses the web pages of the online video services, along with a handy button to start downloading to your hard disk the video that is playing in the main window of whichever of the compatible multimedia portals VDownloader is using.
It is compatible with sites ranging from YouTube and MySpace to others such as Stage 6 (recently closed down), 123 Video, Google, Lulu TV and MegaVideo, among others. As if that wasn’t enough, it also provides a menu with options for selecting the video format to use when saving the video downloaded from the online source to your hard disk. The choices range from the un-encoded format, as downloaded from the web page, to formats specific to iPod or other portable devices such as the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, not forgetting the format optimised for PSPs and those for generic 3G mobile phones. It’s also possible to only encode the audio, into MP3 format, which is a very useful option if you’re learning a foreign language and just want the audio to help you improve your listening skills. This is practically a must-have program for all addicts to the “new television” of the Internet.

To become a pro, start with VirtualDub

Editing videos doesn’t have to involve getting to grips with complicated programs with endless menus and enough tools to keep a professional film maker occupied. If all you need is a tool for cutting scenes, extracting audio or even converting a video into an animated GIF sequence, VirtualDub is a good choice: it’s easy to use, and has just the right number of tools to carry out these simple, but extremely useful tasks. What’s more, it doesn’t need an installer and works straight from the folder where the files are unpacked, meaning that you can carry it around with you on a USB memory key and always be ready for those emergency editing jobs.

The interface doesn’t have too many bells and whistles but is functional. There are two main windows: one with the original video and another with the processed video. The toolbar concentrates on the tasks of cutting, selecting the selection starting and finishing points, the play-back controls, and little else. Everything is designed with speed and functionality in mind.

And if all that isn’t enough for you, it also includes filters for processing the video’s colours and sharpness and even includes some basic effects.

You can download it in Goofull VirtualDub.
